(2)\r\nChakravarti Rajagopalachari informally called Rajaji or C.R., was an Indian\r\nlawyer, independence activist, politician, writer and statesman.\r\nRajagopalachari was the last Governor-General of India and the first Indian\r\nGovernor-General of India. He also served as leader of the Indian National Congress,\r\nPremier of the Madras Presidency, Governor of West Bengal, Minister for Home\r\nAffairs of the Indian Union and Chief Minister of Madras state. Rajaji founded\r\nthe Swatantra Party and was one of the first recipients of India’s highest\r\ncivilian award, the Bharat Ratna. He vehemently opposed the use of nuclear\r\nweapons and was a proponent of world peace and disarmament. During his\r\nlifetime, he also acquired the nickname ‘Mango of Salem’.

302. (4) India had non-Congress\r\ngovernments in some states even in 1951, with the first communist government\r\nunder E.M.S. Namboodiripad in Kerala and a coalition in the Patiala and Eastern\r\nPunjab States Union (later merged with Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh).\r\nAs the first non-Indian National Congress Chief Minister in Republic of India,\r\nNamboodiripad became the leader of the first democratically elected Communist\r\ngovernment in India (San Marino being first in the world).

303. (2) The\r\nRepublic of india is governed in terms of the Constitution of India which was\r\nadopted by the Constituent Assembly on 26th November 1949 and came into force\r\non 26th January 1950. The date 26 January was chosen to commemorate the Puma\r\nSwaraj declaration of independence of 1930. With its adoption, the Union of\r\nIndia officially became the modem and contemporary Republic of India and it\r\nreplaced the Government of India Act 1935 as the country’s fundamental\r\ngoverning document.

This act, passed in June and receiving royal assent in July, took\r\neffect on 15 August 1947. On 15 August 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime\r\nMinister of free India, addressed the Constituent Assembly. In his famous\r\nspeech, Tryst with Destiny, he declared the end of the colonial era and called\r\non citizens to recognize the promise and opportunity of the moment: “Long years\r\nago, we made a tryst with destiny. Now the time has come when we shall redeem\r\nour pledge - not wholly or in full measure - but very substantially.”

(4) Gandhi\r\nurged the Congress to launch a Non-Cooperation Movement on three issues, which\r\nwere; redressal of the wrongs committed in Punjab that entailed the Jallianwala\r\nBagh massacre and the atrocities related to the marital laws, the Khilafat\r\nwrong and accomplishment of swaraj. In September, 1920, a special session of\r\nthe Congress, presided by Lala Lajpat Rai was convened at Calcutta that sought\r\nto approve the scheme. 308. (1) Dadabhai Naoroji, known\r\nas the Grand Old Man of India, was a Parsi intellectual, educator, cotton\r\ntrader, and an early Indian political and social leader. His book Poverty and\r\nUn-British Rule in India brought attention to the draining of India’s wealth\r\ninto Britain.
