431. (3) The\r\nconvocation of an assembly at Kannauj was one of the most significant events of\r\nthe reign of Harsha. The purpose of this assembly was to simplify the doctrines\r\nof Mahayanism. This assembly was convened in 643 A.D. It was attended by kings\r\nof eighteen countries, 3000 Brahmanas and Jains, 3000 Buddhist monks of\r\nMahayana and Hinayana sects and 1000 Buddhist monks of Nalanda Vihara. The\r\nfamous Chinese traveler, Hiuen Tsang was also present and presided the\r\nassembly.

432. (2) The\r\nfirst two metals to be used widely were gold and copper. The use of copper in\r\nantiquity is of more significance than gold as the first tools, implements and\r\nweapons were made from copper. From 4,000 to 6,000\r\nBC was the Chalcolithic period which was when copper came into\r\ncommon use. By 3600 BC the first copper smelted artifacts were found in the\r\nNile valley and copper rings, bracelets, chisels were found. By 3000 BC\r\nweapons, tools etc. were widely found. Tools and weapons of utilitarian value\r\nwere now within society, however, only kings and royalty had such tools; it\r\nwould take another 500 years before they reached the peasants.

433. (1) The\r\nSatavahana kings mostly used lead as the material for their coins. Most of\r\ntheir coins are in that metal. Silver coins are very rare. Next lo lead they\r\nused an alloy of silver and copper, called “potin”. Many copper coins are also\r\navailable. Although the Satavahana coins are devoid of any beauty or artistic\r\nmerit, they constitute a valuable source-material for the dynastic history of\r\nthe Satavahanas.

434. (2) Gandhi’s\r\nmain tactic in his fight against the British was what he called Satyagraha,\r\nwhich means “Soul-Force” or ‘The power of truth”. Gandhi developed Satyagraha\r\nas the practical extension of ahimsa and love; it meant standing firmly behind\r\none’s ideals, but without hatred. Satyagraha took the form of civil\r\ndisobedience and non-cooperation with evil. Civil disobedience involved\r\nbreaking a specific law if it was believed to be unjust, and then facing the\r\nconsequences. The other element of Satyagraha, non-cooperation with evil,\r\nconsisted of pulling out all support for an unjust system, such as the British\r\nrule of India.

435. (4) The\r\nGhadar Party, initially the

\r\n\r\n

         Pacific Coast Hindustan Association, was formed in 1913 in\r\nthe United States under the leadership of Har Dayal, with Sohan Singh Bhakna as\r\nits president. The members of the party were Indian immigrants, largely from\r\nPunjab. Many of its members were students at University of California at\r\nBerkeley including Dayal, Tarak Nath Das, Maulavi Barkatullah, Kartar Singh\r\nSarabha and V.G. Pingle. The party quickly gained support from Indian\r\nexpatriates, especially in the United States, Canada and Asia*. The party was\r\nbuilt around the weekly paper The Ghadar, which carried the caption on the\r\nmasthead: Angrezi Raj Ka Dushman (an enemy of the British rule). The first\r\nissue of The Ghadar was published from San Francisco on November 1, 1913.

437. (2) Lala Har\r\nDayal was a Indian nationalist revolutionary who founded the Ghadar Party in\r\nAmerica. He was a polymath who turned down a career in the Indian Civil\r\nService. His simple living and intellectual acumen inspired many expatriate\r\nIndians living in Canada and the L’SA to fight agaitsl British imperialism\r\nduring the First World War.

438. (3) Vasco da\r\nGama was a Portuguese explorer, one of the most successful in the Age of\r\nDiscovery and the commander of the first ships to sail directly from Europe to\r\nIndia. After decades of sailors trying to reach India with thousands of lives\r\nand dozens of vessels lost in shipwrecks and attacks, Gama landed in Calicut on\r\nthe 20 May, 1498. This discovery was very impactful and paved the way for the\r\nPortuguese to establish a long lasting colonial empire in Asia.

439. (3) Jana\r\nGana Mana was first published under the title “Bharat Vidhata” in the\r\nTatvabodhini Patrika, the official organ of Maharishi Devendranath Tagore’s\r\nBrahmoSamaj in January 1912. The song was subtitled Brahmo-Sangeet. However,\r\nthe English translation of the original in Bengali was published earlier, on\r\nDecember 28, 1911, in the Bengalee. Much later, it was included in Tagore’s\r\nDharma Sangeet, a collection of religious hymns.

(4) On 30\r\nApril 1908, two Bengali youths, Prafulla Chaki and Khudiram Bose, threw a bomb\r\non a carriage at Muzaffarpur, in order to kill the Chief Presidency Magistrate\r\nDouglas Kingsford of Calcutta fame, but erroneously killed some women\r\ntravelling in it. Tilak, in his paper Kesari, defended the revolutionaries and\r\ncalled for immediate Swaraj or self-rule. The Government swiftly arrested him\r\nfor sedition and was sent to Mandalay, Burma from 1908 to 1914. While in the\r\nprison he wrote the most-famous Gita Rahasya.
