It was\r\nused to store surplus food grains. There were two rows of granaries. Each row\r\nhad six granaries. A similar granary has been found in Mohanjodaro. All the\r\ngranaries were built close to the river bank so that grains could be easily\r\ntransported with the help of boats.

488. (*) On\r\nNovember 1, 1858, a grand Darbar was held at Allahabad. Lord Canning sent forth\r\nthe royal proclamation which announced that the queen had assumed the\r\ngovernment of India. This proclamation declared the future policy of the\r\nBritish Rule in India. The document was called “Magna Carta of the People of\r\nIndia” and was declared in eloquent words the principles of justice and\r\nreligious toleration as the guiding policy of the queen’s rule. The document also\r\ngranted amnesty to all except those who had directly taken part in the murder\r\nof British subjects. Peace was proclaimed throughout India on July 8, 1859. The\r\narmies of the East India Company ceased to exist and the forces in India were\r\nincorporated as an integral part of the British army.
