226. (1) Charles\r\nJohn Canning, known as The Viscount Canning from 1837 to 1859, was an English\r\nstatesman and Governor-General of India during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. In\r\n1858 he was rewarded by being made the first Viceroy of India. In April 1859 he\r\nreceived the thanks of both Houses of Parliament for his great services during\r\nthe rebellion.
