Tokyo: A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the Japanese coast on Saturday, geologists said, shaking buildings in Tokyo and setting off car alarms.Despite the huge power of the quake, there was no risk of a tsunami, The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre reported.Residential buildings swayed for around a minute as the quake built in intensity at around 8.30pm (1130 GMT), an AFP correspondent reported.Representational image. It was centred on a remote spot in the Pacific Ocean around 870 kilometres south of Tokyo, the US Geological Survey said. Yoshiyuki Sasamoto, who runs a traditional guest house on Chichijima, one of the closest inhabited places to the epicentre, told NHK the shaking had been violent.
"Initially a weaker quake hit and it stopped. Then the big one came. It was so strong that I couldn't stand still and couldn't walk," he said.

#* Cabinet nod for land ordinance's re-promulgation, Rahul accuses Modi of 'land grab' yet again
New Delhi:The union cabinet on Saturday gave its approval to the re-promulgation of the land acquisition ordinance, triggering strong criticism from opposition parties including the Congress whose leader Rahul Gandhi accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of being "in an amazing hurry to grab land from the poor farmers at any cost".The move was also criticised by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.The cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, gave its approval to amend the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Amendment) Ordinance, 2015. This will be the third time it will be promulgated.The ordinance was first promulgated in December last year to amend the act passed during the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in 2013. An official release said that changes in the 2013 Act "will facilitate farmers to get better compensation and rehabilitation and resettlement benefits" in lieu of land compulsorily acquired by the government.

It instantly triggered speculation about the growing hiatus between the two leaders.Both the leaders were scheduled to be present at the Nishad (fishermen) rally along with JD(U) president Sharad Yadav to project unity among the Janata Parivar.While Lalu and Sharad participated in the rally, Nitish Kumar was conspicuous by his absence.Though Kumar attended an official function to launch the construction of Ambedkar residential school buildings and inaugurated godowns for grain storage, he announced cancellation of his participation in the Nishad rally, which he was scheduled to inaugurate.When asked about his skipping the rally, in which he was to share dais with the RJD chief, Kumar said it was because of his recent eye operation."I will not be able to make it to the programme due to laser surgery of my eye. I had informed the organisers about it beforehand," he said.However, state animal husbandry minister Baidyanath Sahni, who played an important role in organizing the Nishad rally at Gandhi Maidan, said no politics should be read into it.
